The last few years have seen a number of trends impacting youth sports in the United States, such as:

1. Technology. The ever-increasing incorporation of social media sites into everyday life is revolutionizing how officials, coaches, parents, and young people interact and are quickly becoming an integral part of youth sports leagues.

2. Flag football. Seen by many parents as a potentially safer alternative to traditional tackle football, participation in organized flag football increased in 2015. Other youth sports such as baseball and wrestling saw increases as well, while lacrosse participation decreased from the previous year.

3. The fun factor. Many youth athletic organizations, including hockey, basketball, and soccer are re-focusing on the fun aspect of youth sports by promoting the benefits of team sports over competition.

4. Fundraising. Fundraising activities will become a critical, if not mandatory, part of youth sports leagues as costs continue to act as a deterrent for many families wishing to participate. Parents can expect to see the usual candy sales and car washes, as well as increased pushes for business sponsorships.
